Pluvialis squatarola

In summer adults are spotted black and white on the back and wings (Wikipedia, general species account). The grey plover or black-bellied plover (Pluvialis squatarola) is a large plover breeding in Arctic regions. The grey plover was formally described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae under the binomial name Tringa squatarola. It is now placed with three other plovers in the genus Pluvialis that was introduced by the French ornithologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760. (Wikipedia, general species account).

The grey plover, called the black-bellied plover in North America, is a large plover that breeds in Arctic regions and is a long-distance migrant with a nearly worldwide coastal distribution when not breeding. It is 27 to 30 cm long with a wingspan of 71 to 83 cm and weighs 190 to 280 g, up to 345 g before migration. Three subspecies are recognised, breeding in north Eurasia and Alaska, on Wrangel Island, and in north Canada (Wikipedia, general species account). (Wikipedia, general species account).
