Basic stats

Habitat

Dense moist lowland forest to 900m

Range

Northern and central Sulawesi, Manadotua and Lembeh

The green-backed kingfisher is an Actenoides forest kingfisher restricted to northern and central Sulawesi and the small islands of Manadotua and Lembeh. Two subspecies are recognised, monachus and capucinus. The black-headed kingfisher was formerly included in this species but was raised to full species rank in 2014, so older range and identification accounts may combine the two and need taxonomic checking (Wikipedia account citing IOC World Bird List).

It inhabits dense tropical moist lowland forest from sea level to about 900 m. Verified localities include Lore Lindu, Bogani Nani Wartabone and Tangkoko Batuangus protected areas. The sources opened did not provide a dependable species-specific description, body measurements, prey list, foraging method, nest site, clutch or incubation period. Those details are therefore omitted rather than inferred from other Actenoides kingfishers or from similarly named American green kingfishers (Wikipedia general account).
