Ruddy Turnstone is a small, stocky wading bird, 22 to 24 cm long, and a highly migratory one. It is now placed in the sandpiper family, though once sometimes with the plovers (Wikipedia, general species account). Two subspecies are recognised: the nominate form breeds from north-east Canada and Greenland across northern Europe to north-east Siberia and winters from Europe and Africa to Asia and Australasia, and morinella breeds in north-east Alaska and north Canada (Wikipedia, general species account). (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is the only turnstone in much of its range and is often called simply the turnstone. It is the only species of turnstone in much of its range and is often known simply as turnstone. The subspecies A. i. morinella occurs in northern Alaska and in Arctic Canada as far east as Baffin Island. A. i. interpres breeds in western Alaska, Ellesmere Island, Greenland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and northern Russia. (Wikipedia, general species account).
