Cynopterus luzoniensis
Range
Sulawesi, the Philippines and adjacent small islands
Size
One North Sulawesi study: head and body 79.04mm; forearm 64.38mm
The Sulawesi dog-faced fruit bat, also called Peters’s fruit bat, is a small member of the fruit-bat family. A North Sulawesi identification study distinguished it from other local Cynopterus by its small body and orange-brown hair around the neck. The specimens examined averaged 79.04 mm in head-and-body length and 64.38 mm in forearm length; these are study values rather than limits for the species as a whole. A Smithsonian female from the Philippines weighed 54 g (Sulawesi fruit-bat identification study; Smithsonian NMNH specimen record).
The verified geographic sources place Cynopterus luzoniensis on Sulawesi, in the Philippines and on nearby smaller islands. Four individuals were recorded during a North Sulawesi survey cited in an Indonesian health-research report, and another ecological study recorded the species in more than one sampled habitat. The material opened did not provide species-specific foods, roost construction or reproduction, so behaviours known from other Cynopterus have not been added. This entry therefore emphasises the features and records that the available species-level sources actually document (Wikipedia general account; Indonesian survey and ecological-study records).
