The white-rumped cuckooshrike is an Indonesian member of Campephagidae named for the pale rump that contrasts with darker upperparts. Its accepted scientific name is Coracina leucopygia. Field observations describe strong white shoulder braces, a double white wing-bar and very pale underparts marked with black streaking, a combination useful when separating it from the slaty and pied cuckooshrikes of the region (Rheindt et al. 2014).

Survey teams recorded silent individuals in burned forest on Taliabu and three pairs during roadside stops near Pagimana on Sulawesi. These observations show use of altered wooded habitat but do not establish a complete habitat preference. The opened sources did not document food, nest structure or clutch size, so those data remain omitted. The species should not be confused with similarly named white-bellied cuckooshrikes from farther east (Rheindt et al. 2014; IOC World Bird List).
