Diet

Habitat
Montane forest
Range
Sulawesi
Size
35–38cm
The sombre pigeon is a large, dark pigeon endemic to Sulawesi and the only member of the genus Cryptophaps. Adults are predominantly deep brown, with a paler reddish-brown head and neck and a contrasting pale grey area beneath the tail. Published measurements put total length around 35–38 cm. Its unusually dark plumage and habit of remaining within mountain forest help distinguish it from Sulawesi's more conspicuous imperial pigeons (Birds of the World; Oiseaux.net).
This sedentary fruit-eater occupies dense montane forest, with compiled records spanning roughly 950–2,300 m. It feeds by gleaning fruit rather than pursuing prey, but detailed breeding observations remain scarce in accessible species accounts. The bird is often detected by voice in forest where its subdued colouring can make it difficult to see. No clutch size or incubation figure is included because the opened sources did not document those values directly (Oiseaux.net; Birds of the World).
