Basic stats

Habitat

Primary and tall secondary lowland, hill and montane forest

Range

Sulawesi, Lembeh, Muna, Tomea, Kabaena and Buton

Size

23–25cm

The Sulawesi cicadabird is a 23–25 cm cuckooshrike relative. Adult males are dark slate-blue overall, with a still darker head and black lores, face, chin, throat and upper breast. The opened account gives less complete female identification, so no unverified plumage description is added. The species was formerly placed in Coracina and was once combined with the Sangihe cicadabird; some treatments also discuss it within the wider Edolisoma tenuirostre complex (BirdForum and Wikipedia taxonomic accounts).

It occurs on Sulawesi and the nearby islands of Lembeh, Muna, Tomea, Kabaena and Buton, inhabiting primary and tall secondary forest from lowlands through hills into mountains. The species is sedentary and feeds almost entirely on insects, gleaning in trees. Birds forage in pairs, small groups and mixed-species flocks. Recordings include songs and calls from several parts of Sulawesi and the Togians, but the sources opened supplied no nest, clutch or incubation information (BirdForum account; Oiseaux.net ecological synthesis).
