The great-billed kingfisher, also called the black-billed kingfisher, is a Pelargopsis tree kingfisher endemic to the Sulawesi region of Indonesia. Its range includes Sulawesi, several smaller islands around it, the Banggai group and the Sula Archipelago. The accepted scientific name is Pelargopsis melanorhyncha, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service taxonomy record lists both English names for the same species (Wikipedia taxonomic account; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service).

Three subspecies divide the range. The nominate form occupies Sulawesi and islands including Bangka, Lembeh, Manadotua, Muna, Buton and the Togians; dichrorhyncha occurs in the Banggai Islands; and eutreptorhyncha occurs in the Sula group on Taliabu, Seho, Mangole and Sanana. Mangrove forest is the verified habitat. The sources opened did not supply dependable measurements, plumage details, prey, nest, clutch or incubation information, so those are deliberately omitted (Wikipedia general account citing IOC World Bird List).
