Dicrurus montanus
Diet
Flying insects
Habitat
Primary montane forest, chiefly 600–1,800m
Range
Sulawesi, Indonesia
Size
About 25cm
The Sulawesi drongo is a roughly 25 cm forest bird with strongly blue-black plumage, purple iridescence, short neck hackles and relatively small breast spangles. Its long, deeply forked tail has outer tips that curve upward, and the straight bill is black. Eyes are brown to dark reddish-brown. Females resemble males but are smaller with a proportionally longer tail. The larger hair-crested drongo has a white eye and a less deeply forked tail (BirdForum species account).
This endemic is associated with primary mountain rainforest, mainly around 600–1,800 m, though field records extend from about 1,350 to 2,100 m. It is a diurnal aerial insectivore, sallying from perches to capture prey in flight. Ecological summaries identify invertebrates as its food, while broader drongo accounts list large flying insects as typical prey; exact Sulawesi prey items were not independently verified. Nest, clutch and incubation details remain unavailable (Oiseaux.net synthesis; Treubia field survey; Macaulay Library habitat record).
