Scolopax celebensis
Habitat
Wet montane and submontane forest
Range
Sulawesi, Indonesia
The Sulawesi woodcock, also called the Celebes woodcock, is a medium-sized forest wader restricted to Sulawesi. It is larger and darker than the Eurasian woodcock and carries small reddish spots within its otherwise cryptic plumage. Like other Scolopax it has the long bill and compact body associated with feeding on forest ground, but the sources opened do not establish its exact diet or measurements and those have not been inferred from better-known woodcocks (Wikipedia general species account).
Published observations place the species in wet montane and submontane forest. A 2006 field note documented records from Hanggira, Toro and Tornado in Lore Lindu during biodiversity surveys in July and November 2001 and supplied the first detailed habitat description. Even its sounds remain poorly documented: a later comparison reported that researchers could not locate recordings of the Sulawesi species. The available evidence therefore supports a resident mountain-forest specialist while leaving feeding, display, nesting and seasonal biology unresolved (Mole and Wangku 2006; Thibault et al. 2013).
