Gallicrex cinerea
Watercock is a rail and the only member of its genus, widely distributed across Southeast Asia. Adult males are 43 cm long and weigh 476 to 650 g, with mainly black-grey plumage and a red bill, legs, frontal shield and horn. Females are smaller, 36 cm and 298 to 434 g, dark brown above and paler below with streaked and barred markings, a yellow bill and green legs (Wikipedia, general species account). Though traditionally linked to the moorhens, which the adult male resembles, it belongs to a mostly tropical Asian group with Amaurornis and others. Their breeding habitat is swamps across south Asia from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to south China, Korea, Japan, Philippines and Indonesia. These large rails are mainly permanent residents throughout their range. They nest in a dry location on the ground in marsh vegetation, laying 3-6 eggs. (Wikipedia, general species account).
