Eumyias hoevelli
Habitat
Montane forest understorey
Range
Sulawesi
Size
15cm
The blue-fronted flycatcher is a 15 cm Sulawesi endemic with a relatively large bill. Males have a deep blue hood and throat, brighter shining blue across the forehead and sides of the crown, olive-brown upperparts and rich orange below. Females replace the blue hood with grey or grey-brown. The male's blue throat helps separate it from the Sulawesi blue flycatcher (Handbook of the Birds of the World account; eBird/Merlin).
Singles and pairs occupy the understorey of montane forest and sometimes join mixed-species flocks. The song is described as a medium-pitched, melodious warble ending abruptly. Females can be distinguished from several other Sulawesi flycatchers by their brown back and rufous belly. The species has also appeared in older combinations such as Cyornis hoevelli, but current lists place it in Eumyias (eBird/Merlin; BirdForum/HBW).
