Limnonectes malesianus
Diet
Carnivorous
Habitat
Lowland forest, peat swamp and gentle streams
Range
Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Sunda Shelf islands
The Malesian frog is a robust Limnonectes with a broad head, powerful hind legs and extensively webbed hind feet. Its smooth back is reddish brown, often with a very narrow pale line along the centre and small dark blotches on the flanks. Part of the eardrum is dark, while the throat is mottled grey and divided by a pale central line. Males grow larger than females (Singapore National Parks Board).
This nocturnal, semiaquatic carnivore occupies lowland primary and secondary forest, especially peat swamp and the margins of shallow, gently flowing streams. Eggs have been reported from shallow circular depressions in stream gravel. Authoritative range accounts place it on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and associated Sunda Shelf islands, not Sulawesi; its presence in this site's Sulawesi checklist therefore requires review (Singapore National Parks Board; Frogs of Borneo).
