Diet
Bark-dwelling invertebrates
Habitat
Forest and woodland from lowlands to 2,300m; lightly wooded cultivation and towns
Range
Sulawesi, Buton and Togian Islands
Size
13–14cm
The Sulawesi pygmy woodpecker is a small 13–14 cm woodpecker with barred upperparts, a streaked off-white breast and prominent white eyebrow and cheek stripes on an otherwise dark head. Males have a red collar on the neck; females lack it. It is readily separated from Sulawesi’s other resident woodpecker by size, because the ashy woodpecker is much larger. Older classifications place this species in Dendrocopos or Picoides instead of Yungipicus (BirdForum and Wikipedia taxonomic accounts).
This endemic occurs on Sulawesi, Buton and the Togian Islands. It uses moist lowland and mountain forest, woodland, lightly wooded cultivation and occasionally treed urban areas, from the lowlands to about 2,300 m. Ecological datasets classify it as a diurnal insectivore that searches bark for invertebrate prey. The sources opened did not provide a verified nest description, clutch size or incubation period, so those details remain unstated (BirdForum species account; Oiseaux.net ecological synthesis).
