Calamaria butonensis
Range
Buton Island, Southeast Sulawesi
Size
Up to 24.5cm
Calamaria butonensis is a small reed snake described from Buton Island. It reaches a documented maximum total length of 24.5 cm and has uniform body colour. Diagnostic traits include no preocular scale, five upper lip scales, five scales or shields around the paraparietal, nine modified maxillary teeth, and a long tail tapering to a point. Males and females differ in subcaudal counts (Reptile Database diagnosis).
Records cited by the Reptile Database come from Kakenauwe and Lambusango reserves; the type locality in Kakenauwe was at about 150 m. The snake is active around dusk and at night and lays eggs. Its name refers to Buton Island. The accessible account did not provide direct observations of prey, shelter sites, clutch size, incubation or seasonal activity, so those aspects remain deliberately unspecified (Howard and Gillespie 2007; Reptile Database).
