Calamaria longirostris

Reptile Database Snake Checklist

Calamaria longirostris

Basic stats

Range

Buton Island, south-eastern Sulawesi

Clutch size

Egg-laying; clutch size unknown

Calamaria longirostris is a reed snake described from Buton Island in 2007. Its long snout inspired the scientific name. Diagnostic features include four upper-lip scales, no preocular scale, a mental scale separated from the front chin shields and five scales surrounding the paraparietal. Females have 217–226 ventral scales and 11–12 subcaudals; the thick tail ends bluntly rather than tapering (Howard and Gillespie 2007).

The holotype was an adult female caught in a pitfall trap in Lambusango Reserve at 400 m elevation. The documented range is Buton Island, off south-eastern Sulawesi. Reptile Database records the species as egg-laying, but the opened sources contain no clutch count, food records or broader habitat observations. The account therefore stays close to the original specimen and diagnosis rather than assuming the ecology of other Calamaria (Howard and Gillespie 2007; Reptile Database).
