Calamaria virgulata

Basic stats

Range

Parts of Indonesia, East Malaysia and the southern Philippines

Boie's dwarf snake, also called the short-tailed reed snake, is a widely distributed Calamaria with a long history of names later placed in synonymy. Its range includes Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Nias and the Riau Archipelago, East Malaysia, and islands in the southern Philippines. The type locality is Java, while the scientific name refers to a small branch or twig (Reptile Database).

The species lays eggs. Beyond distribution and reproduction, the opened catalogue supplied no exposed diagnosis or dependable species-level natural history; its fuller descriptive material was unavailable. Diet, daily activity, shelter use, size, clutch and incubation are therefore omitted. This matters because older names such as C. gracilis, C. collaris and several Philippine forms have been synonymised with it, making unsourced transfer of local descriptions especially risky (Reptile Database taxonomic account).
