Cerberus schneiderii
Habitat
Coastal mangroves and mudflats
Range
Coastal Southeast Asia from Thailand and Vietnam through Malesia
The Southeast Asian bockadam is a homalopsid water snake distinguished from other Cerberus by usually having 23 scale rows at midbody, thin overlapping plates on the crown without anterior keels, a horizontally divided final upper lip scale and a mottled belly. The species was long confused with related bockadams, and the present name Cerberus schneiderii was adopted after taxonomic revision (Reptile Database diagnosis).
It occurs around coasts from Thailand, Cambodia and southern Vietnam through Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines, including Sulawesi. Cerberus snakes inhabit mangroves and mudflats, and C. schneiderii gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs. The opened source did not provide a dependable species-wide diet, adult length, litter size or breeding season, so these are omitted despite the existence of regional studies (Reptile Database; Cerberus genus account).
