The rainbow water snake is an aquatic homalopsid with several English names, including rainbow mud snake and smooth water snake. The genus and species names derive from a Greek term for water snake. It has 21 dorsal scale rows at midbody, reducing posteriorly, and is distinguished from similar Myrrophis by details of those rows and the relative size of the second chin shields (Reptile Database diagnosis).
Its broad Asian range extends from the Indian subcontinent and southeastern China through mainland Southeast Asia and much of western Indonesia; the database marks the Sulawesi record with uncertainty. It gives birth to live young. A recent parasitological paper states that it eats fish and occasionally small amphibians and reptiles. The opened sources did not provide reliable adult size, litter size or reproductive timing (Reptile Database; published host study).
