Habitat
Freshwater wetlands including rice paddies

South and Southeast Asia, including Sulawesi
Boie's mud snake, also called the rice-paddy or plumbeous water snake, is an aquatic homalopsid with a uniform grey to black back. It has 19 scale rows at midbody and 119–142 ventrals, separating it from the related H. matannensis, which has 21 midbody rows. Its characteristic lead-grey colour is reflected in the Latin name plumbeus (Reptile Database diagnosis and etymology).
The species ranges from parts of South Asia through mainland Southeast Asia to western Indonesia, including Sulawesi, although northern populations formerly included under this name have been split. It is nocturnal, eats fish, frogs and crustaceans, and gives birth to live young. The opened account did not supply a species-wide adult size, litter size or gestation period (Reptile Database general species account).
