The Flores Sea cuckoo-dove is an island pigeon that was formerly combined with the Tanimbar and Timor cuckoo-doves under the names dusky cuckoo-dove or bar-necked cuckoo-dove. Recognition as Macropygia macassariensis gives the Sulawesi and Flores Sea populations their own species name. The account opened provides no dependable plumage measurements or sex differences, so identification details from the formerly combined taxa have not been carried across the split (Wikipedia general taxonomic account).

Two subspecies divide the verified range. The nominate M. m. macassariensis, described by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1865, occurs in southwestern Sulawesi and on Selayar and Tanakeke. M. m. longa, named by Wilhelm Meise in 1930, occupies Tanahjampea and Kalaotoa farther south in the Flores Sea. Macaulay Library records confirm photographed birds on Kalaotoa and in South Sulawesi. The opened sources did not supply species-specific food, voice or breeding biology (Wikipedia account; Macaulay Library records).
