The barred rail is a robust island rail measuring 32–35 cm and weighing about 241–300 g. Its range extends across the Philippines, Sulawesi and Salawati off western New Guinea, with geographically separated populations represented by several subspecies. The Sulawesi form is celebensis. Older classifications sometimes place the species in Hypotaenidia rather than Gallirallus, so both generic combinations occur in field guides and databases. It is generally described as shy and difficult to see even where present (Wikipedia account; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service taxonomy record).
The species forages on the ground and takes animal food, with published accounts specifically documenting eggs, including those of Philippine megapodes. That example confirms opportunistic nest predation but does not establish a complete diet for the Sulawesi population. The sources opened did not provide a reliable species-wide habitat description, daily activity pattern, nest form, clutch size or incubation period. Those details are therefore left unstated instead of being inferred from better-known rails (Wikipedia account citing Handbook of the Birds of the World and Birds of the World).
