Calamaria apraeocularis

Basic stats

Range

Southwestern Sulawesi

The apreocular reed snake is a small calamariine colubrid described by Malcolm Smith in 1927. It is restricted in the available catalogue to southwestern Sulawesi, and its type locality is Djikoro on Mount Bonthain, now Mount Lompobatang. The preserved type series is held by the Natural History Museum. Its name and common name refer to the arrangement of scales before the eye (Reptile Database).

The species lays eggs. Its full diagnostic description is not exposed in the accessible database, although the record links Smith's original description and later systematic treatments of Calamaria. No direct species-level habitat, diet, activity, adult length, clutch size or incubation information was available. Those gaps are left explicit rather than being filled from other reed snakes, whose external similarity can conceal important taxonomic differences (Reptile Database reference list).
