Calamaria acutirostris

Basic stats

Range

South-western Sulawesi

Calamaria acutirostris is the pointed-snout reed snake, a small calamariine colubrid described by George Albert Boulenger in 1896. Scale characters used in specialist keys include the third and fourth upper-lip scales entering the eye, the mental scale touching the front chin shields, and the rear pair of chin shields remaining separated along the midline. The upper-jaw teeth are unmodified (Inger and Marx 1965; Reptile Database).

The species is endemic to south-western Sulawesi. Its type material came from Loca on Mount Bonthain, the older name for the Lompobattang massif. The accessible sources document its diagnostic head scalation and restricted range but provide no dependable species-level observations of food, daily activity or reproduction. Those details are therefore omitted rather than inferred from better-known reed snakes (Boulenger 1896; de Lang and Vogel 2005; Reptile Database).
